“Bibliotherapy” is reading books for self-help or therapeutic purposes. Irish Public Libraries have been providing this service since the “Books on Prescription” scheme in 2007.

The “Read your Mind” book collection focuses on mental health issues and these books are available for free to young people, their parents, and friends at libraries across Tallaght and Clondalkin. The service was established jointly with Jigsaw.
The “Power of Words” project was launched in February 2009 and is a partnership between Public Libraries, the HSE and the Irish College of General Practitioners. The Power of Words scheme – a national list of 30 books to support and aid persons to gain insight into and treat their emotional and psychological problems. Your GP or your local library can provide you with more information on this scheme.
